while being sick, i'm watching movies from my laptop using kinda slow wireless connection and NFS (network file system), and i had 2 significant problems. both solved with the best video player in the world, mplayer.
1. since connection speed is barely enough for watching movies, skipping occures quite frequently.
-cache 8192 option increases cache (preload buffer) size. skipping is gone completely.
of course it will not work for much slower connections.
2. most movies are quite low in volume.. sometimes, even my desktop speakers are too quiet.
to boost sound volume over maximum (real life saver!), mplayer provides software volume control: -softvol -softvol-max 500
hope that helps someone.
